Plymouth-Canton board approves routine business: hires, electronic signs and virtual academy provider; trustees ask for transparency on AI

The Plymouth-Canton Community Schools Board approved routine business items July 9, including the consent agenda (which contained 41 hires, minutes and ratified tentative agreements with four bargaining units), appointment of auditors and legal counsel, and several procurement and vendor decisions.

Under action item 27-07-04 the board approved purchasing electronic building signs for Farrand and Gallimore elementary schools using bond funds; the motion carried 6-0. District staff characterized the signs as part of ongoing renovation projects supported by the 2020 bond.

Board members also voted to approve a revised high-school virtual academy program and to contract with subject.com as the platform provider (action 27-07-05). Several trustees expressed concerns about how artificial intelligence is used in the platform. A board member asked for explicit transparency for families; district staff described course content as instructor-led and said the platform's AI "tutor" would provide off-hours assistance. Student representative Arjun Swaminathan and board members recommended follow-up reporting and a 6- or 12-month review of outcomes.

Human resources staff recognized a long list of retirees and introduced the new hires, which include classroom teachers and specialists across PCCS schools; the board thanked negotiating teams for the tentative agreements that were ratified by union membership.

All routine business motions recorded in the meeting were approved by voice vote without recorded opposition where noted.
