The Bluff City Board of Mayor and Aldermen approved the first reading of Ordinance 2026-005, a town Internet cybersecurity and sensitive-information policy, after the town manager told the board the draft was adapted from a model provided by the Municipal Technical Advisory Service (MTAS).
The manager described the policy as “common sense” guidance for staff: do not click unknown links, avoid opening unexpected attachments, and use official Bluff City email accounts rather than personal Gmail. The manager said the policy removes social-media rules already covered by a separate policy and focuses on protecting residents’ private information and town systems.
Board members asked when the policy would take effect; the manager said this was the first reading and implementation timing will follow usual ordinance procedure. A motion for the first reading was made by Speaker 5, seconded by the chair, and carried on a roll-call-style affirmation.
The manager noted the policy’s practical goals: to document expected employee behavior, require signatures on privacy commitments, and reduce risk when the town expands services such as online payments and property tax collections.
The board will consider further readings or final adoption after the required procedural steps and any legal review.
