Bartlett commission backs outreach to shoreland homeowners using new Maine Audubon guide

The Bartlett Conservation Commission discussed shoreland habitat restoration and outreach at its Nov. 10 meeting after reviewing Maine Audubon's new guide 'Forests for Maine Fish.' Colleen Ryan proposed sharing the guide with local waterfront landowners to reduce clearing and mowing practices that can harm fish habitat and water quality.
Commission members supported a range of outreach ideas: making and mailing a brochure to shoreland landowners; organizing a public presentation potentially in partnership with Tin Mountain, the Upper Saco Valley Land Trust (USVLT) or similar groups; checking whether the University/Cooperative Extension has outreach programs covering the same material; posting a link on the commission's Facebook page; and creating a poster for the town bulletin board.
Mike Morin agreed to contact Tin Mountain about partnership interest, and Colleen Ryan will look into Extension resources. The commission did not authorize a budget at the Nov. 10 meeting; next steps will include assessing partner availability and whether printed materials are feasible.
