Council flags repeated crashes at busy intersection, suggests traffic survey

Council members and staff discussed mounting traffic-safety concerns at a local intersection where speeding and backups have been observed.

S1 asked the council to revisit a recent workshop that examined an accident at the location and whether new traffic control measures were needed. S2 said a roundabout would ease congestion but that there is likely not enough room to build one, and recommended conducting another traffic survey once nearby development progresses.

S2 told the council there have been seven crashes at the intersection since last year, citing earlier years with fewer incidents and describing morning backups that extend along both sides of the gym. "I've gone up early in the mornings, and cars will back up along both sides of the gym for the road," S2 said, adding that a survey could provide data to guide changes.

Council members agreed to discuss the issue in upcoming early meetings and to gather more data from staff and partner agencies before considering traffic-control installations or design changes. No formal motion or funding decision was made during the session.

Next steps identified in the meeting included scheduling the topic for future council discussion and pursuing a traffic survey to quantify vehicle counts and speeds before committing to infrastructure changes.
