Commission backs outreach to waterfront owners using Maine Audubon guide

Colleen Ryan, a member of the Bartlett Conservation Commission, introduced Maine Audubon's new guide “Forests for Maine Fish,” saying it provides practical stewardship recommendations for homeowners with land near water to protect fish, wildlife and water quality.
Commissioners said many local waterfront landowners may not realize how clearing or mowing in the shoreland zone can harm aquatic habitat. They discussed several outreach methods: mailing a brochure to shoreland landowners; organizing a presentation, potentially partnering with Tin Mountain, Upper Saco Valley Land Trust (USVLT) or similar groups; checking University/Extension outreach programs; posting a link on the commission’s Facebook page; and creating a poster for town bulletin boards.
As follow-up, Mike Morin agreed to contact Tin Mountain about partnering on shoreland management education for homeowners, and Colleen Ryan said she would look into Extension resources. The commission did not record any funding commitments; it viewed initial outreach as low-cost and likely to rely on partner organizations.
The commission will report back on partner interest and any draft outreach materials at a future meeting.
