Conservation commission considers Lingering Hemlock Project monitoring plot

The commission heard that the project seeks sites where HWA has not yet caused significant damage to establish volunteer monitoring plots. Ryan said suitable sites need a substantial hemlock component and no active management planned so volunteers can monitor tree condition over time.
Commissioners discussed the possibility of placing a monitoring plot in Pine Hill Town Forest. Craig Billie agreed to send Colleen Ryan a high-quality map of Town-owned lands to help determine whether a suitable parcel exists. No formal vote or permit request was recorded at the meeting.
Next steps include the commission reviewing the map and coordinating with project organizers and land managers to confirm site suitability before any plot is installed. The commission will revisit the item at a future meeting.
