Shenandoah council to charge 3% in‑office credit card fee starting July 1

The Shenandoah Town Council voted June 9 to assess a 3% fee on credit card payments made in the town office to offset processing charges, with the fee effective July 1, 2026.
Council Member Lynn Fox introduced the proposal, saying the fee covers charges imposed by credit-card processors. The motion, seconded by Council Member Denise Cave, passed by roll call: Council Members Cave, Fox, Haggett and Reisinger voted in favor; Mayor Clinton O. Lucas, Jr. abstained; Vice Mayor Kite and Council Member I. Michael Lowe were absent.
Council Member Cave recommended that residents who enroll in automatic withdrawal be switched to emailed billing, a procedural suggestion the council asked staff to consider.
The fee will apply to payments made in the office; the council did not specify whether it would apply to online payments processed through third‑party systems.
The council will implement the fee beginning July 1 and the Town Clerk and Treasurer were assigned to update payment procedures.
