Commission backs four stop-control installations on Buchanan Street to improve sight lines

On July 9 the commission unanimously approved staff recommendations to install side-street stop control at four intersections along Buchanan Street to improve driver sight lines and clarify right-of-way.
Associate Traffic Engineer Matthew Edgeworth presented a California MUTCD–based evaluation showing restricted sight distance at the minor approaches for York Avenue, Magnolia Avenue, Puro Place and Rhonda Place. Edgeworth said installing stop control on the minor legs would require drivers to stop and assess conflicting traffic before entering the intersection, which he said would reduce driver uncertainty and improve safety. “Installing stop control on the York Avenue approaches would require drivers to stop and assess conflicting traffic before entering into the intersection,” Edgeworth said during the presentation.
Commissioners asked questions about sidewalk and ADA impacts; staff said the changes are stop-control assignments and do not require curb work. With clarifications provided, the commission voted 5–0 to forward the recommended stop locations to the city council for amendment of the city’s official stop-location schedule.
Next steps include staff preparing the city council agenda item and updating the city’s schedule of stop locations; installation of signs will follow council action and scheduling.
