Bethania adopts resolution to pursue closure of portion of Queens Grant Road amid Pulte Homes development

The Town of Bethania Board of Commissioners unanimously adopted a resolution on Feb. 13 declaring the town's intent to close a portion of Queens Grant Road amid concerns about a proposed Pulte Homes subdivision adjacent to the Bethania Woods neighborhood.

Attorney Matthew Bryant, introduced by Mayor Brent Rockett, recapped the subdivision timeline dating to late 2023 and told commissioners the town had had "very little opportunity" to provide input on the project while warning that increased traffic could significantly affect Bethania roads. Bryant said, citing case law, that the town has authority to close part of Queens Grant Road and described the resolution on the agenda as intended to determine the town's "intent." Mayor Rockett said he would consult the mayor of Elon about a similar street closure Elon used in a Gibsonville matter.

Joy Berong read a letter from resident Neal Kon that raised concerns about the survey process, said the onus of road closure could fall on 18 property owners rather than the town, and flagged potential liability issues. Commissioner Tom Beroth voiced support for proceeding with the closure. After the Clerk read the resolution, Beroth moved for adoption; the motion passed unanimously.

The resolution, as read by Town Clerk Karen Keller, declares the town's intention to pursue the process required to close the specified portion of Queens Grant Road.
