Visitor Center reports rising visitation; Black Walnut Festival plans continue; board moves meetings to 6 p.m.

At the Sept. 5 Board meeting, Visitor Center staff member Julia Jordan reported increased visitation, noting that "visitation has increased, possibly due to the cooler weather," and that the gift shop has taken $950 in sales since mid-June.
Commissioner Johanna Brown, reporting for festival organizer Beth Spieler, said the Black Walnut Festival currently has 35 vendors and two food vendors; advertising is planned in the Winston-Salem Journal and on WFDD, and volunteer sign-up information will include a QR code. The apple press will be on display but there will be no demonstration this year.
Separately, Commissioner Michelle Leonard moved to change the monthly Board meeting start time from 7:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.; the motion passed unanimously.
The board also reviewed financial reports (balances as of Aug. 31, 2024) with no questions and heard that 20 tickets were written in August, 19 of which were for speeding with an average of 20.00 mph over the limit, per Town Clerk Karen Keller.
