Marion School Board approves routine consent items, ACP plan and policy changes; staff report Healthy Smiles participation

The School District of Marion Board approved routine consent and action items during its Jan. 13, 2025 meeting, including minutes from December meetings, payment of checks and ACH transfers, the December 31 financial report, presented hires, and donations of hats, mittens and gloves from local churches.

The Board approved the district Academic & Career Planning (ACP) Plan and changes to Neola Policy 5410 (Promotion, Placement, and Retention). It also approved general and special education open enrollment slots and an intergovernmental agreement to form a Marion‑Tigerton cooperative football program. Board members set a special meeting for schematic design review on Jan. 27, 2025.

District staff reports: Brian Morstad told the Board that Healthy Smiles provided preventive dental care to 162 elementary students (about $33,000 in services) and that 59 K–3 students required Personal Reading Plans to meet the mid‑year Act 20 requirement; staff will update grade‑level goals after winter assessments. Dan Breitrick reported Healthy Smiles saw 102 students in grades 7–12 (approximately $21,000 in care), noted ongoing scheduling for 2025–26 and career pathway activities including Wolf River School To Work outreach. Lee Ann Wiese described special education staff work to embed personal reading plans into IEPs when reading is an identified disability and to add plans for students who need them otherwise.
