Marion administrators report rising enrollment, referendum outreach and plans for middle-school addition

Administrators reported an enrollment FTE of about 492 for 2024-25, described active referendum outreach with tax-impact calculators online, and outlined facilities and CTE planning at the Oct. 14 Marion School Board meeting. District administrators used the Oct. 14 board meeting to update members on enrollment, communications around a referendum and several facility and student-support items.
Nathan Papendorf of the business office reported that preliminary membership FTE for 2024-25 is about 492, the highest in the last decade aside from 2016-17, and up from a low of 460 in 2020-21. He said the 2023–24 audit and financial reporting were nearing completion and that the district's referendum website with tax-impact calculators has been live for several weeks to help voters understand possible tax implications.
Mr. Edwards reported active community outreach including presentations to the Lions Club and the Dupont town board and said two of four snapshot videos have been posted via ParentSquare and Facebook. He also reviewed facilities planning, including a middle-school addition and remodel and updates to career and technical education spaces.
Mr. Brian Morstad briefed the board on instructional timelines: fall assessments are complete and will inform intervention groups and grade-level writing goals during a January professional development day. Mr. Dan Breitrick described extracurricular and discipline metrics: homecoming participation was strong; the district has collected 30 phones since Sept. 3 under its cell-phone collection program (including five repeat offenses and one suspension tied to a failure to surrender a phone).
Other operational notes included completion of Crisis Prevention Institute training for paraprofessionals, a new Student Study Team referral process, upcoming campus tours for ACP Day, and several student events including NHS's Trunk or Treat on Oct. 31 and an FFA delegation attending the national FFA convention. The district's new phone service (Frontier) and Skyward phone system are installed; the district moved from physical fax machines to eFax.
Administrators said the business office will shift next into aid certification and budget-adoption work ahead of the special meeting scheduled for Oct. 28.
