At its Aug. 12, 2024 meeting the School Board of the School District of Marion approved multiple operational items as administrators reported increased enrollment and other readiness steps for the 2024–25 school year.
Personnel and procedural votes: the board approved resignations from two co-curricular coaches (Jeff Heiliger, JV girls basketball; Bethany Grunewald, JV softball) and approved new hires including Ana Grimm and Ellie Mielke (elementary classroom teachers) and educational assistants Ashley Moder and Amber Beyersdorf. The motion approving resignations and hirings carried (the minutes record John Schwartz abstaining on that vote). The board also approved a floating full-time substitute position and approved overnight trip requests for the coming year.
Policy and contracts: the board approved the 2024–25 Employee and Co-Curricular handbooks (recorded with one abstention), set athletic ticket prices for 2024–25 (with updated family-pass language), and approved the Mini Mustangs Daycare contract. The board set employee travel per diems to follow the State of Wisconsin Pocket Travel Guide; that motion carried with two abstentions recorded.
Administrative reports and numbers: Brian Morstad reported the district is fully staffed for classroom teachers, that 4K enrollment increased to 28 this year from 21 last year, and that registration added 22 new students in grades 5K–6. Dan Breitrick described online registration activity (more than 60 completed early; more than 100 by Aug. 7) and said 7th-grade orientation had 28 of 34 families attend plus three new high-school students. Nathan Papendorf said the district’s Food Service contract was approved by the Department of Public Instruction and that the district’s Free Claiming Percentage increased from 67.94% to 72.24%; the minutes list DPI reimbursement rates of $2.84 per breakfast, $4.45 per lunch and $1.21 per afterschool snack. The board heard that restorative-practices training for staff had occurred and that new-teacher inservice and full staff return dates are scheduled in August.
Meeting close: the board moved into closed session at 6:30 p.m. to consider district personnel matters, reconvened in open session at 7:05 p.m., approved personnel actions as presented, and adjourned at 7:07 p.m.
