Markesan council approves 75-cent wage increase, camera system and other routine measures

The City of Markesan Common Council on Dec. 9 approved a series of personnel, equipment and administrative measures, including a $0.75-per-hour wage increase for full-time city employees and the purchase of a camera system for City Hall.
The council voted 6-0 to approve the wage increase after a motion by Ald. Kazda, seconded by Ald. Triemstra. The council approved a TECC quote of $11,462 for a City Hall camera system on a motion by Ald. Triemstra, seconded by Ald. Kazda; funding was assigned $5,000 from the City municipal budget overlay and $6,462 from the Police Department budget. The council also authorized the Police Department to solicit bids for a new police vehicle (motion by Ald. Kazda, seconded by Ald. Abendroth), motion carried 6-0.
Other approvals included a Memorandum of Understanding with Green Lake County for the WisVote voter registration system (motion by Ald. Abendroth, seconded by Ald. Prill) and the 2026 League Insurance renewal proposal with a $55,324 total premium and a $2,500 deductible (motion by Ald. Abendroth, seconded by Ald. Triemstra). The council approved an updated Recycling Ordinance (motion by Ald. Kazda, seconded by Ald. Triemstra) and allocated $500 for the city Christmas Tree Lighting event (motion by Ald. Kazda, seconded by Ald. Triemstra). All motions in this block were recorded as carried 6-0.
The council approved an employment advertisement for a Deputy Clerk/Treasurer–Police Clerk position with a correction to the advertisement language noted by the council (motion by Ald. Lager, seconded by Ald. Thiem). The council also voted to make council pay payable in 2025 so that both 2024 and 2025 payments would appear on the 2025 W‑2 (motion by Ald. Prill, seconded by Ald. Lager).
Licenses for transient retail sales for Mad City Window (Cody Golden, Logan Gonnering, Michael Wenzelow and Levi Ready) were approved for a 30-day period (motion by Ald. Thiem, seconded by Ald. Triemstra). The council scheduled committee meetings for Jan. 6, 2026 and set the next Common Council meeting for Jan. 13, 2026.
The council convened in closed session at 7:26 p.m. under Wis. Stats. 19.85(1)(c) to consider the city clerk review; no formal action was taken in closed session. The council returned to open session pursuant to Wis. Stats. 19.85(2) and adjourned at 7:56 p.m.
Meeting attendance as recorded in the minutes included Mayor Slate; Clerk/Treasurer Tamra M. Harrington; and alderpersons Abendroth, Kazda, Lager, Prill, Thiem and Triemstra. The Berlin Journal was noted as present (reporter Kristin Radtke).
