Markesan council approves amended 2026 budget, adds ambulance staff to payroll and awards public-works bids

The Markesan Common Council approved several routine administrative and maintenance items at its Oct. 14 meeting at Markesan City Hall.
The council voted to approve an amended 2026 budget for publication (motion Triemstra/Kazda), advancing the document to public notice. By roll call the motion passed 4-0.
Council members also approved adding ambulance staff to the City payroll for the purpose of providing benefits and making retirement contributions. The change was approved at a stated cost of $15.00 per employee (motion Abendroth/Kazda) and passed 4-0 on roll call.
In separate votes, the council awarded a $3,250 contract to New Heritage Builders to repair and replace sidewalks at Hein Park, with $975 billed to the City and $2,275 billed to Utilities (motion Prill/Abendroth); approved a $1,800 bid from Capital Tree for removal of trees at Soldier's & Sailor's Park and City Hall (motion Prill/Abendroth); and approved a $5,993.85 bid from Ness Electric to repair variable frequency drives at the water/wastewater treatment plant (motion Abendroth/Triemstra). Each motion carried 4-0.
The council also approved Alcohol/Soda licenses for Dave's Place (David Haase) for the licensing period ending June 30, 2026 (motion Abendroth/Triemstra). The September 2025 Treasurer's Report was filed for audit by consensus, and claims including City checks and electronic payments were approved (motion Prill/Abendroth), carried 4-0 on roll call.
The meeting included a scheduled meet-and-greet with Judge Troy Damsteegt under the formalities portion of the agenda; no formal action resulted from that item. Council members set future meeting dates, including a Keep Markesan Grand Committee meeting on Oct. 20, 2025, and adjourned at 7:40 p.m.
