Durand council accepts Lion’s Club banner donation, OKs FunFest open-container permit and routine business

The Durand City Council on May 27 accepted a banner donation from the Durand Lion’s Club, approved a Special Event Open Container Application for FunFest (June 5–7) and handled routine business including temporary event licenses and voucher approvals.
During the consent agenda the council approved temporary bartender licenses for Brian J Winnekins, Rhonda A Sweeney and Valerene L Cataract, a picnic license, parade permit, street closures and a Music in the Park street closure scheduled for June 17. The consent agenda was approved on a motion by LeAnna Kavanaugh, seconded by Matt Roesler, and carried by unanimous voice vote.
Council Member Matt Roesler moved to accept the Lion’s Club’s banner donation, with assistance from city staff for installation; the motion, seconded by LeAnna Kavanaugh, carried by unanimous voice vote. The council also approved a FunFest open-container permit on a motion by Nick Weisenbeck, seconded by Travis Hooker; that motion carried by unanimous voice vote.
In reports, Mayor Patrick J Milliren reminded residents of FunFest and thanked the American Legion for its Memorial Day event and donation of cement picnic tables at Veteran’s Park. Administrator Tracy Carlson told the council the city closed on a $2.6 million bond issue to finance Madison Street; Carlson said portions will be repaid through the Safe Drinking Water Fund and the Clean Water Fund loan programs. Carlson also noted upcoming Comprehensive Plan stakeholder meetings and cemetery database updates, including inquiries about potter’s field records.
Police Chief Stan Ridgeway reported that Officer Bonnerup and Ridgeway completed bike-safety programming with schoolchildren. Public Works Director Matt Gilles reported pool staffing is finalized, the pool will open June 8 (middle school event June 3), Madison Street work is ahead of schedule, sewer RBC disc work is expected mid-July, and the 6th Avenue E project will begin June 15 and aims to be complete before school starts.
The council approved vouchers #31601–31631 in the amount of $364,532.65 on a motion by Travis Hooker, seconded by LeAnna Kavanaugh; the roll-call vote was 6 ayes, 0 nays. Robert Weishapple moved to adjourn, seconded by LeAnna Kavanaugh; the motion carried and the meeting adjourned at 6:34 p.m.
