Durand staff report: election turnout, grant application, sewer repairs and ambulance calls

City Administrator Tracy Carlson and department heads updated the Durand City Council on elections, grants, equipment, and infrastructure at the April 8 meeting.
Administrator Carlson reported 457 voters participated in the April 7 election and that a new election tabulator is expected April 15. She said Durands Farmers Market was canceled due to a lack of vendor applications and that the city submitted a State of Wisconsin Innovation Grant application; the Department of Revenue has requested additional information. Carlson also reported that Standard & Poor's assigned the city an A+ rating and noted that staff member Jenni King will attend the WMCA Northern Wisconsin Conference.
Police Chief Stan Ridgeway said squad tires needing replacement are under warranty and that department personnel will participate in scheduled training.
Public Works Director Matt Gilles said the March blizzard was declared a State of Wisconsin natural disaster, allowing the city to pursue reimbursement grants for some storm costs. He reported 18 lifeguard applications and that swimming lessons will operate through the school districts summer program. Gilles told the council a gearbox at the sewer plant has failed and the city is awaiting a repair quote, and that sewer-line repairs will be needed on Durand Street. He also said construction work has begun on Madison Street and that weekly construction updates will be posted to the city website.
Ambulance Co-Director Doughty reported 29 ambulance calls in March, including three transfers, and discussed upcoming training. The council approved routine vouchers and adjourned at 7:01 p.m.
The council scheduled an organizational meeting for April 21, 2026, at 5:30 p.m.
