Police chief reports no contact with approved hire; borough manager lists upcoming hearings, trainings and grant support

Police Chief David Pernice told the Union City Borough Council on Aug. 27 that he has been unable to contact a previously approved new hire and is assuming the candidate is no longer interested. He said he intends to contact the regional hiring consortium and work with the Civil Service Commission to set up oral exams and send letters as the department continues recruitment. Council agreed to continue the search for a single part-time officer.
Borough Manager Cindy Wells provided a series of administrative notices and community event announcements. She said an EC Planning EMS meeting is scheduled at Fort LeBoeuf on Aug. 28 and highlighted Devereaux Day on Sept. 13, a kickoff event for park and trail improvements on French Creek that also promotes the Erie-to-Pittsburgh Trailhead; Representative Banta, a representative for Senator Dan Laughlin, County Executive Brenton Davis and Jessica Horan with Erie County Planning were listed as invited attendees and UCCF was invited as well.
Wells also reminded council that the next council meeting is Sept. 16, 2024 at 6:30 P.M. and that the public hearing for the zoning ordinance amendment will be advertised twice as required; she said council will also vote on an amendment to the parking ordinance. She noted a meeting with council members to present health insurance plans on Sept. 25 at the city building, a free Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) training on Sept. 27–29, and the UPMC Hamot Erie County Firefighters Association Safety Awards dinner on Sept. 27. Wells said the borough will not advertise bids on the towing ordinance and that a letter of support will be sent for a PennDOT Charging & Fueling Infrastructure Discretionary Grant application along the U.S. Route 6 corridor.
No public commenters spoke during the hearing-of-visitors portion of the meeting. The meeting opened with the Union City vision statement and a moment of silence and adjourned at 6:19 P.M.
