Plan Commission recommends City Council approve Bridge–Spruce bike/ped crossing, 4–2
Summary
The Plan Commission recommended final-plan approval to City Council for a DOT-ready bike and pedestrian crossing at Bridge and Spruce Streets, contingent on construction timing coordination, sidewalk preservation along Railroad Street, and push-button assemblies on both sides of Hwy 45 and in the median; the motion passed 4–2.
The Plan Commission voted to recommend that the City Council approve final plans for a bike and pedestrian crossing at Bridge and Spruce Streets after representatives from Great Headwaters Trails Foundation and the Eagle River Revitalization Program presented DOT-ready plans.
Laura VanValkenberg, president of the Great Headwaters Trails Foundation, and JoAnn Simmons, executive director of the Eagle River Revitalization Program, presented the project; Aaron Wallner of Becher Hoppe joined by Zoom to answer technical questions. Commissioners discussed timing and potential impacts to existing sidewalks along Railroad Street.
Commissioner Adam Grassl moved, and Commissioner Alex Forer seconded, a motion to recommend final-plan approval to the City Council provided the city coordinates construction timing, any alteration or removal of existing sidewalks on Railroad Street is coordinated with the city, and push-button crossing assemblies are installed on both east and west sides of the Hwy 45 crossing as well as in the median. The motion passed on a roll-call vote, 4–2. Ayes: Grassl, Forer, Brad Adamovich and John Hletko. Nays: Mary Horant and Kim Schaffer.
The recommendation will be forwarded to the City Council for final action; the commission’s conditions are intended to protect pedestrian access and ensure coordination with city infrastructure work.
