Town Hall mold remediation underway; asbestos abatement complete, clearance testing planned

Town Manager Keli Reekes updated the South Hill Town Council on ongoing remediation at Town Hall on Jan. 13, 2025.
Reekes said asbestos abatement work has been completed. Mold remediation and cleaning are underway and expected to continue through the end of March, with clearance testing scheduled for early April; restoration work will begin once testing confirms the building meets clearance standards. The timeline was presented as part of the town’s facilities update.
Earlier in the meeting resident Wade Crowder addressed the council expressing concern about mold in Town Hall as well as separate issues including the Forest Lane water line, the location of the dog park and the need for a homeless shelter. Council accepted Reekes’s update and agreed to consider staffing and facilities issues during upcoming budget planning. Reekes also introduced Leanne Patrick as a new administrative assistant, scheduled to start Feb. 10, 2025; Council will consider her appointment as Clerk of Council at its February meeting.
The council accepted routine financial and departmental reports at the meeting; Dahlis Morrow reported a General Fund balance of $9,494,327.18 and total investments of $27,971,905.19 in the monthly financial report presented with the consent agenda.
