Elmwood library seeks $20,000 grant; back-door replacement tabled pending more estimates

Elmwood Public Library Director Nick Andrews told the Village Board on Nov. 10 that circulation is increasing and that teachers and students are actively using library resources, and he said the library is pursuing a $20,000 grant through the Friends of the Elmwood Library to fund automatic front and back doors. The grant application is due before the December meeting.
The board reviewed a quote from Lindus Construction to replace the library's back door. Board member Paul Unser expressed concern about the door frame and the likelihood that the new door may require constant adjustment; the board tabled the item while staff obtains additional estimates from other contractors.
During discussion of a separate facilities request, the board considered a proposal from Emmaus Church to use the Village Dining Room at minimal or no cost. Members expressed concern about appearing to favor a particular religion; Library Director Nick Andrews said the church is welcome to use the library during open hours at no cost.
Public Works reported routine maintenance and infrastructure work, including repairs to a west clarifier tank, tree removal, street sweeping, seasonal park bathroom closure, and pending streetlight repairs by Hartung Electric. Fiber was installed at the Public Works building by 24/7, and staff completed several water meter shutoffs and reinstalls.
Chief Darren Ekholm reported that Elmwood Police Department responded to 26 calls for service in October while the Pierce County Sheriff's Office handled 14 calls within the village; he also noted completion of the department's Lexipol policy update and thanked the community for contributions to a hats, mittens, gloves and gift-card donation drive. Clerk/Treasurer Holly Malaszuk said a TID #5 Joint Review Board meeting is scheduled Thursday at 3:00 p.m., reminded residents about the deadline to pay past-due water and sewer accounts before they are submitted to the county tax roll, and reported the final TID #3 distributions to taxing jurisdictions. She also noted upcoming village office closures for the Thanksgiving holiday and an early closing on Dec. 5 for a Celebration of Life for Rita Princko.
The board did not approve the back-door replacement; staff will return with additional estimates.
