Council approves temporary liquor license extension; discusses ATV/UTV referendum and traffic safety

The Common Council approved a Temporary Extension of Premise application for a Class B beer/liquor license for Slice Golf, LLC (agent Sarah Kilps) for a Fall Kickoff event scheduled Sept. 28, 2024. Alderperson Erika Stuart moved the license extension, Jim Brooks seconded, and the motion passed 8-0.
Stuart also announced a planned 4‑way stop at Porter Road and 7th Street to serve the Aquatic Center area. She relayed data from the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources that 27 people had been killed on ATVs/UTVs in 2024 to date, with many incidents involving lack of seatbelts, helmets, or alcohol. Separately, City Administrator Jason Sergeant reported that language for an ATV/UTV referendum has been submitted for inclusion on the ballot and that the League of Wisconsin Municipalities recommended a contact person for referendum questions; Mayor Dianne Duggan offered to serve as that contact.
In other safety and personnel updates, Lita Droster reported the Fire District’s Anniversary Party was well attended and noted a 2% loss in fire dues this year tied to some departments failing annual audits; the district logged 172 calls so far in 2024 compared with 169 in 2023. Mayor Duggan also noted Officer Laufenberg will be retiring from the Evansville Police Department after 31 years. The Council then voted to convene in closed session under Wis. Stat. §19.85(1)(e) to discuss property/negotiation matters and not to reconvene in open session.
