At the Oct. 28 public session, resident Vicki Schroder said the Haunted Mine Tour was "a great success," reporting that after expenses the event raised about $9,500 to support the eighth-grade trip to Boston. Schroder thanked the Fire Department, First Aid Squad, Police Department and Historical Society for their support and said dates for next year are set for Oct. 23–24, 2020.
"It really was the best year; thank you to the town for your corporation, the Fire Department, First Aid Squad for coming up and the Police Department," Schroder told council.
David Astor, identified in the minutes as Superintendent of Ogdensburg Elementary School, thanked community partners and the Sterling Mine Museum for support that has allowed three consecutive free trips to Boston for eighth graders. Astor also raised a safety concern and asked the council to consider an ordinance to enable police to ticket drivers violating the school's driving policy at drop-off, noting the circle and visitor spot present hazards when used incorrectly.
Councilwoman Slater noted a local fundraiser: Brick and Brew will hold an all-day event on Thanksgiving Eve to raise money for the seventh-grade trip.
Mayor George P. Hutnick relayed a police update that Chief Gordon reported 61 pounds of medication were collected during a recent drug take-back event, a result Hutnick presented to the council as a positive community outcome.
There being no further public business, the council closed the public session and proceeded to approve vouchers and departmental finance reports before adjourning at 7:35 p.m.
