Planning commission approves 14-space parking expansion for Helping Hands Residential Care

The Zeeland Planning Commission voted unanimously on June 4 to approve a 14-space parking lot addition at 201 Royal Park Dr. for Helping Hands Residential Care, contingent on final stormwater management review and a landscaping waiver for one canopy tree.
Jason Hall of Midwest Construction Group, speaking for the applicant, said Helping Hands’ services have expanded and on-site parking no longer meets demand, forcing staff and clients to use on-street spaces. "The purpose of the request is to add 14 parking spaces to help alleviate traffic flow issues and reduce congestion caused by vehicles parking along the street," Hall said.
Zoning Administrator Timothy Maday told commissioners the site, constructed in 2021, currently provides more than the minimum parking required by the Zoning Ordinance but that the applicant seeks additional spaces to accommodate operations. Maday said staff found the proposed layout compliant with setback and aisle standards and recommended conditional approval pending final stormwater management review. Staff also supported a waiver for one canopy tree given the site layout.
Motion 2026.08, moved by Commissioner Daniel Klompmaker and supported by Commissioner Rick VanDorp, passed on a roll call vote with Perkins, Holstege, Klompmaker, VanDorp and Chairman Bill Elhart voting aye.
The approval allows construction to proceed once the city's engineering consultant signs off on stormwater and parking plans and the applicant meets the listed conditions.
