Residents press council over maintenance building buffer, sewer-lagoon debris; town will retain parcel and fence it

Donna Beatty, whose property borders the Town’s Jefferson Street parcel planned for a maintenance storage building, asked the council to consider selling part of the town parcel to create a buffer between her building and the new facility.
Town staff and the maintenance department said the full parcel is needed for operations. Town Attorney Dale Cottam outlined options if the town chose to sell or issue a temporary license, but after discussion council members determined it would not sell the land at this time. Mayor Joel Neuenschwander said the town will fence and utilize the entire parcel; he also stated that the town will not place the salt/sand mix adjacent to the Beattys’ east boundary.
Separately, Jeannie Finch raised concerns about items that have accumulated at the town’s sewer lagoons and about upkeep of streets, right-of-ways and sidewalks. Finch said she had contacted county commissioners, who indicated they would waive landfill fees if the town chose to remove the materials. Council members noted auditors had flagged sewer-fund revenue and expenditure issues; they scheduled further review of sewer-fund finances at the December Utility Board meeting.
No land sale or change of parcel ownership was authorized at the meeting; the council’s direction was to retain the parcel for municipal use and to fence the site. The Utility Board will consider sewer-fund revenue and expenditure concerns at its next scheduled meeting.
