Chandra Hayes sworn in as acting superintendent; board launches nationwide search

Chandra Hayes was sworn in as acting superintendent of Albemarle County Public Schools and told the board she is “deeply grateful” for the opportunity and intends to listen, learn and focus on student outcomes during the transition. The board administered the oath of office and posed for brief photos before moving on to business.
The board said it will conduct a competitive nationwide search for a permanent superintendent and expects to contract an executive search firm through the county procurement process this summer, with a firm in place by October 2026. Hayes said she will provide regular superintendent updates at business meetings and that staff will pursue a transparent selection process that solicits community feedback.
Earlier in the meeting the board approved an item described on the record as “Public schools effective immediately to serve through 06/30/2027” after a motion by Allison Spillman and a second from Judy Lee. A roll-call vote recorded seven yes votes and no dissent; the chair announced the motion carried 7–0.
Hayes, who joined ACPS three years ago, described her commitment to support students, staff and families while the board conducts the search. “I am committed to working along alongside all ACPS employees in the year ahead,” she said, adding that the division’s strength is its people and pledging to focus on transparency where appropriate and accountability where required.
The board also expressed sympathy for the family of a Monticello High School student who died on July 1 and held a moment of silence.
What’s next: the board plans to begin the advertised nationwide search this fall; staff said a firm will be selected via procurement and that the public will have opportunities to provide input as candidates are considered.
