Northmoor aldermen review proposed update to building and fire codes, defer final vote

City of Northmoor officials on Oct. 8 reviewed a proposed Ordinance 2024-014 that would repeal and replace multiple local code sections to align building, plumbing, mechanical, electrical and residential standards with recent model-code editions. The ordinance text in the packet would update most codes to the 2016 editions and adopt the 2021 edition of the fire code.
Inspector Mixon recommended omitting the insulation portion of the proposed 2024 building-code language, and Mayor Lynda Witson said she supported using the 2016 code editions as recommended. No final adoption vote was taken during the meeting.
Alderman Joe Harris asked that the full code materials be placed on the November agenda so aldermen can examine them more thoroughly before any final action. The board agreed to allow additional review time rather than vote on the ordinance at the Oct. 8 meeting.
Why it matters: updates to adopted building and fire codes change the technical standards that contractors and property owners must follow for permits and inspections. The specific decision to adopt the 2016 model codes (with the 2021 fire code) would set the baseline for plan review and enforcement in Northmoor; excluding the insulation provision narrows the scope of changes under consideration.
