Northmoor advances ordinance to update building and fire codes to newer international editions

At its Nov. 5 meeting the Board of Aldermen recorded the first and second readings of Ordinance 2024-014, which would repeal several Section 500 provisions and adopt new language updating multiple international codes. The ordinance text specified updates to building, plumbing, mechanical, electrical, fire, residential, existing buildings, fuel gas and property maintenance codes. Most codes were updated to the 2018 editions; the fire code was updated to the 2021 edition.

Both readings were recorded with roll call votes of 3-0 in favor. The meeting minutes list Alderman Robin Griffith as making the first reading and Alderman Wright participating in the roll calls; the board did not elaborate further at the meeting on enforcement timelines or costs associated with bringing local code enforcement into alignment with the new editions.

Mayor Lynda Wilson and staff also discussed code-enforcement staffing later in the meeting, saying current residential enforcement is limited by part-time staff and that the fire codes employee has had limited availability. The board indicated it is reviewing resumes for replacements but did not establish an implementation timeline during this session.
