Epping commission approves standard language for groundwater protection de-icing signs

Chair Liz Wilson led the Epping Conservation Commission on May 20 in approving a standardized sign message for the town’s Groundwater Protection District.
"NOTICE Groundwater Protection Area Application of De-icing Substances must be in accordance with Town of Epping regulations," Wilson moved. Vice Chair Dan McCombs seconded the motion, which carried 5-0.
The Commission said it intentionally omitted references to specific de-icing products and regulatory citations in the sign wording, and discussed—but declined for now—the use of a QR code because of concerns whether a broken link could be cited as an excuse for noncompliance. Wilson said she will run the approved language by the Town Administrator and consult the Town Planner about sign size, font and placement (one sign at each egress).
Vice Chair McCombs noted there are three new properties awaiting Groundwater Protection District signage; the Commission is prioritizing consistent messaging rather than listing chemical names on the sign. Commissioners also acknowledged recently installed lamprey signs at Tilton Conservation Area, near Town Hall and at Mary Blair Park.
The next step is for staff to coordinate production and placement of the signs after planner and administrator review.
