The Saint Peter Public Schools board on June 30 voted unanimously to award Peterson Sheet Metal (PSM) a contract not to exceed $186,538 to repair the high school chiller system after the district reported persistent failures dating to May.
Board Chair Charlie Potts called the special meeting to order at 7:47 AM. According to meeting minutes, the district implemented short-term fixes — renting a temporary chiller and installing above-ground piping — while consulting HVAC partners on a long-term repair. The recommended solution replaces cracked underground pipes that officials said are the source of the ongoing problem.
Board member Ken Rossow moved to proceed with Peterson Sheet Metal's proposal for an amount not to exceed $186,538; Kate Martens seconded. Minutes note that PSM is a state-approved contractor and, as the primary contractor on the district's "Mend the Middle Project," the companywas considered known and trusted; that status allowed the district to award the work without a competitive bid process. The board approved the motion by roll-call vote, 5-0. Voting yes were Martens, Potts, Kautt, Rossow and Dixon (participating virtually); Tracy Stuewe and Rita Rassbach were absent.
The action authorizes the district to contract with PSM for the repair work; minutes do not specify contract start or completion dates, warranty terms, or funding source. The meeting record states the chiller has not been functioning correctly since May and that temporary measures were deployed while the long-term repair was developed in consultation with HVAC partners.
A motion to adjourn at 8:12 AM was made by Martens and seconded by Kautt and carried unanimously. The minutes indicate they had not yet been board-approved at the time the document was produced.
