Town Administrator Jake T. Roger presented five options for resident verification and trash control at the Transfer Station during the May 11 Board of Selectmen meeting, and the board agreed to install video cameras while retaining the current sticker system with stronger enforcement.
Roger outlined the five options presented to the board: (1) an automatic gate with a windshield sticker or chip to open the gate; (2) automatic bollards that raise and lower; (3) a small shed with an attendant checking stickers and manually opening the gate; (4) a pay-as-you-throw system using special bags for household trash; and (5) weighing vehicles on entry and exit and charging by weight. Road Supervisor Moe Hicks and employee Dave Tapley asked the board to keep the sticker system and enforce it more consistently.
Board members said they wanted to keep changes simple to keep vehicles moving through the line. The board approved installing video cameras on the sheds and instructed that camera reports be forwarded to the police when problems occur. Members noted that after the landfill is capped the Transfer Station could be reconfigured and a different solution might be preferable.
Officials also discussed updating the dump policy with higher penalties to discourage misuse; no specific penalty amounts were set at the meeting.
Next steps include installation of cameras and further discussion of long-term Transfer Station configuration once the landfill closure allows site rework.
