Greenland commission readies spring plantings and Route 33 clean-up, eyes PREP grant and strategic plan

Conservation Commission members at the April 8 meeting advanced volunteer stewardship work for spring, including a tree-and-shrub planting and coordination of a Route 33 roadside cleanup.
Member Chip Hussey said he will use a tractor auger to dig holes and deliver planting medium; the rootstock is expected to arrive the week of April 20 and most commission members, spouses and some community volunteers plan to help. The group discussed whether deer guards are necessary; Jean Eno said she would contact Rick Simpson, former owner of Rolling Green, to check whether guards are cost-effective, will assemble a supplies/tools list for volunteers and promote the effort on Facebook. The board voted to approve $75 for planting medium.
Jean Eno also reported that Lowe’s manager Robyn Welsh expressed interest in supporting a two-phase roadside and Pickering Brook cleanup. Tentative dates discussed were Saturday, May 2 or May 9 for the roadside cleanup and Sunday, May 3 or May 17 for the Pickering Brook segment, pending Transfer Station scheduling and Lowe’s confirmation.
Separately, member Alice Passer alerted the commission to Piscataqua Region Estuary Partnership (PREP) grant opportunities for a prime wetland inventory; the commission agreed to add grant discussion to the next meeting. Jean Eno proposed the commission develop a strategic plan to separate long-term goals from short-term projects; Chair Kathleen Babin-Johnson said she would add the item to the May agenda and requested materials be circulated in advance.
The meeting also included a housekeeping decision to move the May meeting date from May 13 to May 6.
