Farmington seeks EPA meeting on Collins & Aikman site as redevelopment interest grows

Vice Chairman Charlie King and town staff said Farmington is seeking a meeting with EPA Region 1 to clarify cleanup timelines and to press for phased release of additional acreage at the contaminated Collins & Aikman site.
The request came in a memo from Planning Director Kyle Pimental and was relayed to the board by Erica Dickie-Yelle, HR/Welfare Director. "Staff recommend that at least one but no more than 2 Selectmen attend the meeting to represent the board," Dickie-Yelle said. The memo notes about 16 acres adjacent to Meetinghouse Hill Road have been released for redevelopment and that the town wants EPA to evaluate early release of additional areas where contamination appears limited or absent.
The town also asked EPA to clarify the status of the responsible party, McCord Corporation, and whether ongoing litigation has altered timelines set out in the July 2025 record of decision for interim remedial actions. Town officials said they want a clearer schedule for remedial design, projected start dates for implementation activities, and guidance on what redevelopment uses would be compatible with remediation plans. Recent preliminary inquiries about the site have included potential industrial uses and interest in a VA hospital, the memo said.
King said staff are working to schedule the meeting and recommended that one or two Selectmen attend to represent Farmington. The board did not take a formal vote on redevelopment preferences at the meeting; staff will forward the meeting date and allow the Selectmen to determine who will attend based on availability.
The meeting is intended to give the town a better sense of timing and constraints so it can engage potential developers and address community questions about reuse and restrictions related to cleanup work.
