Velva commission approves no-parking zone near school after safety concern

Commission President Mike Schreiner told the commission he attended a recent school board meeting where crosswalk safety and parking issues were identified as contributing to an unsafe environment for school-age children. Commissioners Gene Jenson and Mary Liz Davis moved to erect 'no parking from 8-4, Monday-Friday' signs on both sides of 1st Avenue from 1st Avenue to Central Avenue; Auditor Jenny Johns was instructed to order six signs. 'No parking from 8-4, Monday-Friday,' the motion specified.
The motion passed on a roll-call vote with Jenson, Davis, Dave Keller and Schreiner voting in favor and Commissioner Ben Zietz voting no. The commission did not attach an implementation delay; Johns will place the sign order and the signs will be installed as soon as scheduling and procurement allow.
Why it matters: The restriction is intended to reduce curbside congestion and improve visibility at crosswalks used by schoolchildren during morning drop-off and afternoon dismissal. Commissioners said the decision followed concerns raised at a local school-board meeting and by community members.
The commission approved routine agenda items earlier in the meeting, including minutes and payroll and bills. With no other business the meeting was adjourned at 7:56 p.m.
