Velva approves $20,000 VCDC allocation for Velva Bulls; first reading clears accessory-buildings changes

The Velva City Commission approved a $20,000 allocation from VCDC sales-tax funds to support renovations for the Velva Bulls, a nonprofit youth-sports organization seeking to convert 116 Main St. North into a wrestling gym and community center.
Tracy Krueger, president of the Velva Community Development Corporation (VCDC), told the commission the Velva Bulls are a 501(c)(3) and that members and board volunteers are doing much of the renovation work to reduce costs. The Velva Bulls had requested $90,000; the commission approved the VCDC recommendation of $20,000 on a Jenson/Keller motion, with a unanimous roll-call vote.
On zoning, the commission held and adopted the first reading of an ordinance amending Sec. 30-165 (Accessory Buildings). Commissioners discussed whether conex containers would be permitted under certain conditions; Commissioners Jenson and Davis moved to adopt the first reading and the motion carried unanimously.
Other routine approvals included a motion by Commissioners Keller and Davis to grant Saint Cecilia’s Catholic Church a raffle permit for its fall supper. The commission also extended an appliance-dump program to allow additional resident drop-offs of appliances and metal.
With the Velva school parking lot being paved, School Superintendent Mayer asked to temporarily allow student parking where "No Parking" signs currently stand; the commission agreed to remove the restriction until the lot is complete. Deputies Dave Dewanz and David Florey suggested converting 4th St. and 5th St. North to one-way traffic to improve flow around the school; the minutes record the suggestion but do not indicate a formal vote on the change.
The commission adjourned at 8:07 p.m.
