Velva commission approves angled speed bump on Central Avenue East after resident complaint

The Velva City Commission voted Oct. 21 to install a 25 mph angled speed bump on the east side of a driveway on Central Avenue East following a resident’s safety complaint.
Resident Lonnie Sather told the commission that safety and excessive speeding increased after the previous speed bump was removed and asked for it to be reinstalled. Public Works Director Kelly Jemtrud and Commissioner Gene Jenson said the earlier bump had been taken out after consultation with the city engineers and Bechtold Paving because "the bump was negatively affecting the gate valve each time it was driven over, as the top of the pipe was being crushed," a condition cited as creating maintenance and utility risks.
Vice President and Police Commissioner Dave Keller and Commissioner Mary Liz Davis moved to install the new 25 mph speed bump; Engineer Alan Walter recommended it be installed at an angle, and Keller and Davis amended their motion to include the angled installation. The motion carried on a unanimous roll call vote.
Commissioners said they had approved signage and two solar radar signs at the prior meeting as a temporary measure while evaluating alternatives such as a valley gutter or relocating a speed bump. The commission did not specify a firm installation date at the meeting but approved the motion "as soon as possible."
