Council debates water and sewer taps for properties outside Byron town limits

At the April 14 meeting the council considered a request from property owner Mike Hernandez for two water and sewer taps serving structures that council members said are outside Byron town limits.
Councilwoman Karma Sanders expressed concern that granting new taps to properties outside the town would contravene the town ordinance and argued the Rural Water Project would be a more appropriate solution. Mayor Allan Clark, noting that some properties outside the limits already receive town services, said additional customers could be beneficial to Byron.
Planning and Zoning member Dan Bodtke and Zoning Administrator Richard Hawley explained that the town's authority ends at the formal boundary and that an annexation or formal paperwork would be required to extend service. Council members asked Hernandez to provide site plans showing structure locations, sewer and water lines and tap placement and agreed to revisit the request after staff review and required paperwork were submitted.
No final vote was taken; the council directed staff and Planning and Zoning to follow up and report back with documentation to allow a decision.
