The Byron Town Council voted April 14 to pay the full cost of snaking a sewer line for the Bassett property after a town inspection found a failed tap and tree roots had entered the main line.
The Bassett family said they had contributed time and money to identify and fix the problem and asked the town to cover the contractor bill. Mayor Allan Clark and Public Works staff, including Jacob Gruell, visited the site and concluded the system was old and the tap was poorly set. Councilman Shae Abraham said the town was likely responsible for the poor installation; council discussion led to approval of the contractor payment.
Brandon Hessenthaler moved to approve full payment to the contractor, Andy Petrich, and Shae Abraham seconded the motion. The vote passed on the floor. Council members also confirmed the system was repaired to their satisfaction and directed staff to process payment.
During discussion the Bassetts asked about zoning for on-site storage units. Dan Bodtke of Planning and Zoning confirmed the parcel is residential-limited but the storage units are grandfathered as commercial; the council advised the Bassetts to meet with Planning and Zoning about any proposed additions.
The council recorded no further conditions on payment; clerk and public works staff were given follow-up tasks to process the contractor payment.
