Jacob Gruell, Byron’s Public Works supervisor, told the council on Feb. 10 that the department needs additional staff to manage snow removal, water and sewer lagoon maintenance, mowing, mosquito control and ditch upkeep. Gruell proposed hiring a full‑time year‑round employee and a part‑time or full‑time summer employee (April–September). He said duckweed overgrowth at the sewer lagoon can demand up to 20 man‑hours per week to control and suggested a pump upgrade might reduce labor needs.
Council discussed alternatives, including recruiting previous employees and hiring an emergency snow‑removal position for the winter rather than an additional full‑time hire. Shae Abraham volunteered to become the town’s second registered Contract Operator to help maintain compliance. Allan Clark said he would reach out to previous applicants. Council did not approve new hires at the Feb. 10 meeting and tabled further action to the March meeting.
