Byron council members told residents on Feb. 10 that structural or functional building changes require pre‑construction permitting and a building inspector’s sign‑off under the town’s Title 11 zoning rules, and that the Planning & Zoning Committee will draft clarifying ordinance revisions.
Mayor Allan Clark and Planning & Zoning Committee member Dan Bodtke said the building inspector is required for new buildings or any additions that increase square footage, and that Title 11 requires sign‑offs for structural or functional changes. Bodtke said revisions to Title 11 should not be made until the town’s Master Plan is completed, and that any ordinance revisions must go through the Planning & Zoning Committee and, when necessary, an attorney to ensure compliance with state statutes.
Council emphasized enforcement options for unauthorized work, noting a failure to submit required documents could lead to a Notice of Violation, fines, and removal of illegal construction. Curtis Abraham raised concerns that required financial obligations could be prohibitive; council directed the committee to work on a revised ordinance and continue discussion in March and April meetings.
Council did not vote on a specific ordinance change on Feb. 10; the matter is scheduled for further review.
