Wishek chosen as first community for ND Rural Community Enhancement Program; ND 13 corridor work planned for 2026

Auditor Mary Vickers told the Wishek City Council on May 5 that the city was selected as the first community for the North Dakota Rural Community Enhancement Program (RCEP), a joint initiative of the ND Department of Commerce and the NDDOT.
Vickers outlined a tentative streetscape plan for the ND 13 corridor set for the 2026 construction season: full decorative lighting within the existing DOT right-of-way, sidewalk replacement near Civic Center Park between 7th and 8th Streets, sidewalk infill on the north side of ND 13 from 12th Street to 40th Ave SE, ADA curb-ramp improvements, planters in the downtown core and bollards with lights adjacent to the Civic Center Park sidewalk. The plan calls for lighting from True Value Hardware on the west end to 1st Street (north side only) and from 1st Street to 40th Ave. SE on both sides.
Vickers also reported that Interstate Engineering will conduct door-to-door lead-and-copper surveys for residents who did not return a survey sent in February 2024. The council did not vote on the RCEP selection itself; Vickers presented the grant update as an informational item.
The selection identifies state support and a multi-year project timeline; Vickers did not provide final engineering drawings or a firm construction start date at the meeting.
