Lancaster staff report failed bacti test, order new sewer pump; council reviews backhoe and parks work

At the July 14 meeting, Lancaster water and sewer staff reported a failed bacteriological (Bacti) test that required retesting upstream and downstream; staff said a failing sewer-meter pump was ordered for replacement and that the Department of Natural Resources has contacted the city to begin meetings on a sewer project.

Water and sewer operations update: George Reindel reported the failed Bacti sample and the need for a pump replacement; he said Randy Montgomery with the Department of Natural Resources has initiated contact about starting sewer-project meetings. Reindel also said a new pump was ordered for a sewer meter showing signs of failure.

Public works and equipment: Councilman Kevin Buckallew reported finding a 2014 580SN backhoe priced at $45,000, noting the seller replaced the 4-in-1 bucket with a standard bucket, installed new filters, alternator and belts, and delivered the unit at no extra charge. Buckallew said the council will continue to evaluate the purchase.

Parks and events: Jimmy McNary said he installed a volleyball net and temporarily replaced basketball nets; Councilman Paul Reynolds praised the park’s condition and Cole Tippett reported residents had good feedback about the recent fireworks display. Tippett also said the city will not pursue purchase of a lot discussed with Regional Planning and that the TAP grant for lighting is on hold pending a later cycle.

Police report: Police noted an animal-at-large citation issued to G. Baker for dogs running loose; officers will address multiple sidewalk parking issues on Route D and may issue citations if vehicles are not moved.

Next steps: staff will proceed with the Bacti retest, coordinate with DNR on sewer-project meetings, and follow up on the potential backhoe purchase. The council did not take formal action on the backhoe or the sewer project during this meeting.
