Merrimac Board directs draft ordinance change on minimum home size, delays SCADA replacement and appoints trustee

Village President Andrew Gallus called the March 11 Board of Trustees meeting to order at 5:30 p.m. Trustees Margaret Budde, Nate Taylor and Stan Senger, Administrator Jennie Klecker and DPW Justin Schultz were present.
During public input Cheryl Anderson, representing Green Merrimac, invited residents to an Eco-Nite home-composting demonstration March 21 and said the group had purchased a large community compost bin.
On the consent agenda the Board approved routine items and outstanding bills. Administrator Jennie Klecker presented background on a resident request to lower Merrimac’s minimum principal building floor area for residential zoning; Klecker reported neighboring communities’ minimums range from 600 to 1,200 sq ft. After discussion, President Gallus and Trustee Taylor moved to direct Administrator Klecker to draft an amendment that would reduce the minimum to 700 sq ft and present it to the Plan Commission for review; the motion carried unanimously.
Trustee Budde briefed the Board on SCADA computer replacement timing, reporting vendor advice that upgrades could be deferred one to two years with minimal risk; the estimated cost of replacing computers and software licensing was approximately $35,000. The Board discussed but did not adopt immediate replacement.
DPW Justin Schultz reported on a meeting with Strand to address a breaker issue on the Wellhouse generator; the Board agreed a new breaker will be installed using remaining contingency funds from the Wellhouse Upgrade project. Frosh Tree Service recently cut back trees and brush on Cemetery Street.
Administrator Klecker introduced Resolution 2025-03-01 honoring Jim Malmberg for his years of service; President Gallus read the resolution aloud and the Board approved it and presented Mr. Malmberg a framed copy.
The Board convened in closed session under Wisconsin Statutes §19.85(1)(c) to interview candidates to fill the remaining unexpired term of Village Trustee (term expires April 21, 2026). After interviews the Board reconvened in open session and, by roll call, Gallus, Senger and Taylor unanimously selected Margaret Budde to fill the vacancy. The meeting adjourned at 7:16 p.m.
