Merrimac trustees approve routine business, deny extended generator warranty and defer digital sign purchase

The Village of Merrimac Board of Trustees met on Jan. 14 at Village Hall. President Andrew Gallus presided; Trustees Margaret Budde, Nate Taylor and Stan Senger were present along with Administrator Jennie Klecker and DPW Justin Schultz.
The Board approved the consent agenda and authorized payment of the monthly bills as presented. Tywana German, director of the Sauk Prairie Chamber of Commerce, delivered a year-end report on 2024 expenditures funded by Municipal Room Tax revenue and outlined planned 2025 marketing and place-making work to promote Merrimac tourism.
On licensing, the Board approved operators licenses for Brittney Nichols (Ferry X-ing Bar & Grill) and Megan Kirschstein (Mac's Pub & Grub). Trustees scheduled the Board of Review for May 6, 2025 at 1:00 p.m.
DPW Justin Schultz reported that the Wellhouse power has been switched to three-phase and the project is near completion; an issue with the backup generator remains under work with Strand and the contractor. The Board discussed purchasing an extended warranty for the new Village Hall generator but ultimately decided against it. Administrator Klecker reported she had received two quotes for a digital sign insert (about $24,000'$30,000 installed) and the Board determined the digital sign was too costly at this time.
Klecker also informed the Board that Trustee Jim Malmberg resigned from both the Plan Commission and Village Board effective Jan. 13. In accordance with Wisconsin Statute 17.24(1), the Board will accept letters of interest through March 3, 2025, review candidates at its March 11 meeting and appoint an interim trustee to serve until April 21, 2026; the appointee will be sworn in at the April 8 meeting.
