Merrimac Parks & Recreation schedules spring cleanups, weighs pavilion options and accepts donated pier

Chairperson Nate Taylor called the Village of Merrimac Parks & Recreation Committee to order on March 6. The committee scheduled three volunteer workdays at Sunrise Shore Park — March 29, April 12 and May 3 — and encouraged residents to meet at the park from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. to assist with cleanup and erosion-control work.
Cheryl Anderson, speaking for Green Merrimac, invited the public to a home-composting demonstration by Bob Pfaff on March 21 at Village Hall and announced an Earth Day Street Sweep set for April 26. Anderson also described Green Merrimac’s participation in a community-wide garage sale planned for May 1–3.
Committee members reviewed proposals for a second pavilion at Memorial Park from Cleary Building. Committee discussion referenced two estimates: a 30-by-30 pavilion including site preparation, concrete and the structure for approximately $33,000, and a larger 33-by-40-by-10'4" gable-end model with enclosed underside for about $56,000; both quotes exclude trenching for water and electric. The committee discussed fundraising options and scheduled a site-stake meeting at Memorial Park on March 29 at 9 a.m. to compare footprints.
Chairperson Taylor reported a donor has offered a painted-steel pier for the Palisade Boat Launch composed of 7-foot-long by 48-inch-wide sections (up to 10 sections) with composite decking. The donor prefers to oversee installation and will rely on a small volunteer crew; the committee agreed the pier would be placed on the right side of the gate (when facing the lake) and that installation would occur in early May if weather permits.
Administrator Jennie Klecker briefed the committee on signage orders for Voll Park and other access points; the sign company will install posts and signs in spring, and Klecker and DPW Justin Schultz will confirm placement. Committee members noted public concern about parking on Weynand Road/Lake Wisconsin Drive, and Klecker reminded the group that the existing ordinance allows parking on the road right-of-way. The Parks & Rec Committee also agreed to add a "Parks & Rec Budget" line to future agendas and to coordinate pavilion promotion with the Merrimac Community Festival scheduled for June 14; Amy Buck volunteered to serve as liaison to the Festival Committee.
At 7:59 p.m. Jennifer Thompson moved to adjourn and Tim Klecker seconded; the motion carried unanimously.
