Board tables rezoning request for Old Varsity Club site after mixed trustee views

Joe Krasovec asked the Plan Commission and Village Board to allow construction of a duplex on the parcel that formerly housed the Old Varsity Club. Krasovec told the Plan Commission he had intended to remodel and reopen the bar and restaurant but design challenges led him to propose tearing down the building and building a duplex.
At its April 7 meeting, the Plan Commission (Interim Chairperson Collin Bourgeois, Bob Garrison and Ann Hoffman) motioned to recommend that the Village Board approve rezoning the property (parcel 151-0247-00000) from B-1 Business to R-2 Residential; the Commission’s motion carried on a unanimous vote.
At the April 8 Board meeting, trustees debated the request; some expressed concern about losing commercially zoned land in a village with limited commercially suitable areas, while others noted the village needs rental housing. After discussion, Trustees Stan Senger and Andrew Gallus moved to table the decision until the next meeting when a full Board is available for a vote; the motion carried unanimously.
The minutes record the Plan Commission recommendation and the Board’s decision to table; no permit applications or conditional-use conditions are recorded. The Board did not vote to approve construction or a conditional use at the April 8 meeting.
