Merrimac Board approves Snowbusters land-use agreement, draft fire-station lease and 2025 water and sewer budget; DNR issues LSL notice

The Village of Merrimac Board of Trustees met Dec. 10 at Village Hall and approved a series of routine items, including a land-use agreement with the Merrimac Snowbusters, a draft lease for the old fire station building with Merrimac Fire & Rescue, and the 2025 water and sewer budget.
Village President Andrew Gallus called the meeting to order at 5:33 p.m.; Trustees Margaret Budde, Jim Malmberg, Nate Taylor and Stan Senger attended. Trustee Jim Malmberg moved to approve the consent agenda and Trustee Stan Senger seconded; the board voted unanimously to approve the consent agenda and to authorize payment of monthly bills.
The board approved a land-use agreement with the Merrimac Snowbusters for trail use. The motion carried with all trustees voting in favor. The board also approved a draft lease between the Village and Merrimac Fire & Rescue for the old fire station at Memorial Park; the lease was approved in draft form and will be finalized through follow-up administrative work.
Administrator and Clerk/Treasurer Jennie Klecker and Village accountant Robin Meier reviewed year-end finances and discussed how to record several large donations that are restricted for a future municipal test well; Meier said reserves are properly funded and will assist with year-end journal entries and transfers.
Trustees set the caucus for nominating candidates for Village Trustee and President for 9 a.m. on Jan. 11, 2025, at Village Hall. The board also approved the 2025 Water & Sewer budget after a motion by Trustee Nate Taylor and a second by President Gallus.
The board received updates on water issues: Strand Associates has submitted a work plan for a WWTP monitoring well to the Wisconsin DNR, and Trustee Stan Senger summarized a meeting with DNR representatives and consultants about options for a potential Municipal Well No. 2, noting that Wisconsin DNR setback rules constrain site selection. The board expects further updates after the new year.
Administrator Klecker reported that the Village received an administrative notice from the DNR relating to the Lead Service Line (LSL) inventory project; the board described the notice as administrative in nature. Klecker said residents will receive a letter and additional information will be posted at Village Hall, the Post Office and on the Village website.
Public comment included remarks from George Naxera of the Sauk Prairie Ambulance Committee, who described a plan to hire eight licensed paramedics to improve emergency transport and said he will update the board during the budget process in July. Trustee Budde congratulated the Merrimac Festival Committee on raising about $4,000.
The meeting adjourned at 7:27 p.m. after a unanimous motion by Trustees Malmberg and Senger.
