Committee advances NCDOT sidewalk agreements for Fisher Ferry Street to Briefing after bridge preservation deemed impractical

City Manager Michael Brandt presented two agreements related to the Fisher Ferry Street project: a memorandum of agreement with the North Carolina Department of Transportation to construct new sidewalks and transfer an existing railroad bridge to the city for pedestrian use, and a right-of-way purchase by NCDOT that would acquire property from the city.
Brandt said earlier talks considered preserving the railroad bridge but that preservation was ultimately deemed unfeasible because of prohibitive costs and environmental hurdles, including the presence of asbestos and complicated deconstruction. The negotiated approach retains the old Fisher Ferry Bridge in place for pedestrian access and to preserve utilities, while NCDOT will construct sidewalks and install a guardrail for safety in the new sidewalk area.
Committee Member Scott Styers moved to send both items to Briefing and Committee Member Payton Williams seconded; the items were advanced for fuller review at Briefing.
