Jefferson extends Transfer Station Monday hours, orders wall repair estimate and letter on C&D rules

The Town of Jefferson Select Board voted Oct. 7 to extend Monday hours at the Transfer Station through Nov. 15 unless snowfall requires earlier closure, and to resume Monday hours April 1. Selectman Norman Brown made the motion and Selectman Kevin Meehan seconded; the motion passed unanimously.

Highway Department supervisor Mike Kenison reported the Transfer Station retaining wall measures approximatey 8 feet high, 8 feet wide and 50 feet long and the board asked him to obtain a repair estimate for inclusion in the 2025 budget so repairs can be scheduled in spring. The board characterized the wall as a capital maintenance item and requested a written quote.

Selectman Kevin Meehan said an individual operating a business in town has been bringing an abundance of construction and demolition (C&D) material to the Transfer Station. The board directed Administrative Assistant Amanda Simino to draft and send a letter reminding users of Transfer Station rules and limits and to attach the rules to any enforcement correspondence.

The board also discussed hauling logistics and suggested alternatives if Whitefield does not share in Airport Road repair costs (discussed separately). No changes to Transfer Station staffing were approved at the meeting; the board decided to keep a Transfer Station position posted while recruitment continues.

Next steps: obtain a written repair quote for the retaining wall for the 2025 budget, and send a rules/enforcement letter to Transfer Station users.
