EDA hears tourism grant, telework center and school updates; plans EDA input on Comprehensive Plan

At its Sept. 5 meeting the King and Queen County Economic Development Authority received several community and local-government updates.
Erin Lazar told members the authority received a $10,000 grant from the Virginia Tourism Corporation for a project to promote tourism and business; she said a photo shoot was scheduled for promotional materials and that two 'LOVE' signs will be installed, one at the library and another at the Telework Center. Lazar also noted that one of the signs is part of a broader promotional push for the county.
Vivian Seay reported that staff are updating the Comprehensive Plan and Zoning Ordinance; both drafts will go first to the Planning Commission and then to the Board of Supervisors. Seay said the Board is actively involved with the elementary school project and with the Telework Center, which she said should be completed in November.
Dr. Carol Carter provided the King and Queen County Public Schools update. She said all three schools are fully accredited, that KQES will host a dumpster while the division removes unused items, and that the school board adopted a budget based on actual in-county enrollment (excluding VAVA virtual students). Carter said lower average daily memberships at the elementary level support the plan for a combined elementary campus on property purchased behind the high school; the division also bought a modular building to use as a cafeteria at the elementary school, purchased playground equipment for a temporary campus and completed some restroom upgrades at Central High School.
Economic Development Director Kelly Evko said her near-term focus is outreach to smaller businesses to foster cohesiveness among current business owners and that she would recommend EDA input into the Economic Development section of the Comprehensive Plan update. Evko also updated the EDA on the former Bennett Mineral property and said the new owner may request a future meeting with the authority.
The EDA did not take additional formal action on these updates at the meeting; members scheduled the next EDA meeting for Oct. 3, 2024.
